EXPOSITION D’ÉVENTAILS XVIII ème

A wide variety of European fans from many countries with an emphasis on national characteristics. Fans from France, England, Italy and Holland will demonstrate how styles varied, but how each nationality was well aware of the specialities of the other : a view of Vesuvius in eruption would be the obvious gift to bring home from the Grand Tour; in the same way a cheap printed fan bought in London could make a good inexpensive gift in France. Conversely a fine quality French fan would be coveted by a fashionable high society  English Milady! Above all the 18th century was the century of the fan. Never again would there be such an explosion  of creativity in this small and specialised industry. As with furniture, the proportions are always right even if the quality is not so good. This is one of the most elegant exhibitions yet to be seen at The Fan Museum
